Food, fellowship and entertainment by a combined choir whose music reflects their love of singing familiar hymns, gospel songs, choir anthems and melodies awaited those who attended a Garden Party on the grounds of St. Paul's Lutheran Church and Parsonage, Normanby (West Grey) last Sunday. The Co-op Choir, which includes members from Lutheran Churches in Mildmay, Neustadt and Normanby, is celebrating its fifth anniversary of musical ministry. What is the Co-op Choir? It is a group of friends, neighbours and relatives from six different churches in Mildmay, Neustadt and Normanby Township, all who love to sing, who gathered together in August of 2005 under the direction of Marlene Dietz to prepare some special music for a co-operative shared summer service. One name seemed to fit their purpose: the Mildmay-Neustadt-Normanby Co-op Choir. Five years later and still going strong, they've shortened their name to The Co-op Choir. It wasn't long before the choir began to get together more regularly to prepare appropriate music for Advent and Easter services as well as receiving invitations to sing as guests in churches in neighbouring communities and as far away as Mississauga. As the choir got more exposure, they were asked to entertain at Seniors' Residences and Nursing Homes. As well, in 2007, the community of Crawford invited them to participate in a variety night of music and song. In 2008, the Co-op Choir prepared its first full concert as a fundraiser for St. Mark's Lutheran Church in Chesley. As well, they sang at the wedding of two of their own choir members. In 2009 they gave a concert in celebration of the 150th Anniversary of the Neustadt Baptist Church and fulfilled requests to sing at other church anniversary celebrations. More recently in the spring of 2010, the Co-op Choir had the opportunity to sing at St. Matthew's Ev. Lutheran Church in Hanover. This event was a fundraiser co-sponsored by FaithLife Financial. Last week's Garden Party featured the Co-op Choir and other special guests. All proceeds from the freewill offering are going towards the "Run 4 Youth" Literacy program. Funds raised will be matched by FaithLife Financial.
